Process - Further dates in the proceedings against right-wing extremist Liebich
Halle (dpa/sa) – The appeal proceedings against the right-wing extremist Sven Liebich at the Regional Court in Halle are expected to continue to lengthen. According to a press spokesperson, the court has set additional hearing dates as Liebich intends to claim "his last word" for approximately 13 hours. A total of seven further hearings are scheduled until early August. The next hearing takes place on the coming Thursday.
The prosecution demanded a prison sentence of two years in their closing argument last week, among other things, due to incitement to hatred and defamation. The judgment was originally scheduled to be pronounced on June 28, 2023. However, Liebich caused a delay by presenting an extensive folder during the closing arguments and announcing that the proceedings would now last longer than expected.
The Magistrates' Court Halle had sentenced Liebich to a prison term of one year and six months without probation in July 2023. The prosecution and defense had both filed appeals. The prosecution considered the judgment of the Magistrates' Court too lenient.
Since 2014, Liebich has regularly organized demonstrations, often on the marketplace in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt. There have been frequent clashes with counter-demonstrators. Courts have dealt with accusations against Liebich on several occasions.
