- Further assaults on political figures and party headquarters in Brandenburg
The frequency of incidents targeting political figures in Brandenburg has seen a surge once more. According to statistics provided by the Interior Ministry in response to queries from the Left Party's Andrea Johlige, a total of 151 such criminal incidents were reported in the second quarter of the year.
Even in the first quarter, the tally stood at a somewhat lower 91 incidents. However, the increase in the second quarter of 2023 was even more substantial, with 62 incidents being reported during that period.
Anticipated rise before election
As the state election scheduled for September 22 approaches, the Interior Ministry also forecasts a further escalation. In its response, it stated that currently, there are no signs or evidence indicating a specific threat to individual politicians or office holders. Nevertheless, an uptick is anticipated as the election date draws nearer. The ministry anticipates this rise to include vandalism of constituency offices or election posters, disruptions of individual election campaign events, and "direct confrontations against the candidates and their campaign assistants."
The 151 incidents in the second quarter were primarily focused on 139 attacks against politicians, office holders, or party representatives. In 12 instances, the offices of parliamentary members and political parties were affected.
The Police have been closely monitoring the escalating number of incidents targeting political figures in Brandenburg, given the anticipated rise before the state election. To ensure the safety of politicians and maintain public order, additional police resources may be deployed as the election date approaches.
