Fürth heads to FC Schalke with "Christmas and St. Nicholas flitters"

The end of the impressive winning streak has not shaken SpVgg Greuther Fürth's self-confidence. A learning effect should also help with the task against a "top club".

Bundesliga 2 - Fürth heads to FC Schalke with "Christmas and St. Nicholas flitters"

SpVgg Greuther Fürth are looking forward to "a special game" at FC Schalke 04 at the end of a good first half of the Bundesliga 2 season. "This is certainly one of the top clubs in Germany, even if they are certainly not at the level they see themselves and where they belong," said coach Alexander Zorniger ahead of the game in Gelsenkirchen on Friday (18:30/Sky). "In terms of play, it's a very interesting team with players who have mostly played at a higher level."

The Franconians go into their first clash in eleven years in fourth place in the table after 28 points from 16 games. Bundesliga relegated Schalke are only in 13th place. "We showed last week, especially in the first half, that we're always capable of creating goalscoring opportunities against any opponent. Our Christmas or St. Nicholas players up front really caused trouble," said Zorniger about the 1-1 draw against 1. FC Magdeburg, when his team wasted chances before the break.

Fürth have recently impressed with a series of wins. Until Sunday's 1-1 draw against Magdeburg almost in the last second of stoppage time, Zorniger's team won five games in a row - each time without conceding a goal. "Schalke also know that we can really hurt them," said Zorniger.

For the coach, his team's annoying experience against Magdeburg could have an instructive effect. "That wasn't quite so clever. Quality has nothing to do with age, but cleverness a little bit," said the 56-year-old.

The team had acquired a taste for "what it's like to win games, to win many games in a row", Zorniger explained. It's all about the "winning mentality", said the coach: "Hating to death everything that stands between me and victory, and fighting everything that is the reason for it." His team, the second youngest in the league, is making "great progress".
