Railroad equipment supplier - Funkwerk opens up Spanish railroad market

The Thuringian railroad equipment supplier Funkwerk has received an order to retrofit more than 500 Spanish passenger trains and locomotives with radio systems. The largest Spanish rail vehicle operator, Renfe Viajeros, has awarded the contract to the company, announced Funkwerk AG, based in Kölleda, on Monday. Funkwerk did not disclose the value of the contract.

The trains to be retrofitted will be used on the Spanish rail network, which covers almost 12,000 kilometers and will be gradually equipped with digital train radio. Until now, drivers in Spain have largely communicated using analog technology. Funkwerk's deliveries to Renfe will begin next year and are expected to be completed by mid-2026.

In addition to retrofitting the existing vehicle fleet in Spain, Funkwerk says it is also supplying train radio systems for around 400 new vehicles to several vehicle manufacturers. "With these orders," says Kerstin Schreiber, Spokeswoman of the Funkwerk Executive Board, "Funkwerk AG is achieving its strategic goal of opening up the Spanish railroad market and establishing itself as a leading supplier of train radio systems in Spain."

The Funkwerk Group employs almost 700 people, including more than 250 employees in Kölleda. This year, the company is aiming for a turnover of around 150 million euros after 132 million euros last year.
