- Funding for the expansion of the Gunzenhauser Museum
The Chemnitz Gunzenhauser Museum is set to receive half a million euros from the assets of the former East German parties, organizations, and mass organizations. According to the Culture Ministry in Dresden, this funding will primarily support the expansion of the fourth floor in the tower, especially for educational offerings.
Opened in 2007, the museum is an important cultural and tourist attraction in the city and has developed into a place of encounter, cultural education, and exchange, it was stated.
Gunzenhauser Foundation Also Contributes
With this funding and an equal financial contribution from the Gunzenhauser Foundation, the museum can be further established as a place of inspiration, especially for young people, said Florence Thurmes, General Director of the Art Collections. Here, the youth council can meet, offers for school classes can be made, or a platform for future-oriented discussions on current social topics can be created.
The museum, housed in a former savings bank building, is home to the significant private collection of Munich art dealer Alfred Gunzenhauser (1926-2015), featuring over 3,000 works of classical modern art from the second half of the 20th century.
This funding from the former East German parties and the additional contribution from the Gunzenhauser Foundation will significantly enhance the museum's educational offerings. The Chemnitz Gunzenhauser Museum is now well-positioned to serve as an educational hub, providing opportunities for young people to engage with art and contemporary issues.
