3rd league - Funding for stadium in Cottbus: alternative being sought
The Lausitz Economic Region will discuss alternative funding possibilities for the renovation and rebuilding of the third league promoter FC Cottbus' stadium with Energy Cottbus. This will be worked on intensively, as the Regional Development Corporation of the German Press Agency reported upon request.
"This has already been discussed with the FC Cottbus president. He will be invited shortly and briefed on the results," said Managing Director Heiko Jahn. Energy reportedly prepared an application for a funding sum in the low millions, which was rejected.
"After the excitement of the last few weeks and months, this is now a setback, a deep disappointment. We celebrated the promotion to the 3. League five weeks ago," FC Cottbus president Sebastian Lemke told the "Niederlausitz aktuell" portal.
The Lausitz Economic Region stated that the legal review had found that the project could not be financed with structural change funding because it involved federal funds. "Sports are, according to the Basic Law, a matter for the states in the federal responsibility division. Therefore, financing is not legally possible," it was stated.

- Despite the rejection of their initial application for funding with an estimated sum in the low millions, FC Energy Cottbus, based in Cottbus, Brandenburg, continues to seek different sources to finance their stadium renovation.
