Bundesliga - Full throttle once again: Werder also want to score against Leipzig
The Werder Bremen professionals also worked hard on the third Advent to ensure a conciliatory end to the year. In private on Sunday, coach Ole Werner prepared his team for the last game of the year against RB Leipzig on Tuesday evening (18:30/Sky). After all, every point counts in the snail's race to avoid relegation - even against a top team like the Champions League contenders from Leipzig.
"If you exclude the game in Stuttgart, we've stabilized in recent weeks," said Werner after the 2:2 draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday evening on the development of his team. Bremen have indeed been more stable over the past few weeks, with the exception of the chanceless performance in Stuttgart. The problem is that the upward trend is not yet really reflected in points. The lead over the relegation places is only five points - Werder will most likely spend the winter in the danger zone.
However, a surprise win against third-placed Leipzig just before Christmas could see the Bremen side take another important step towards a secure mid-table position. The good record at the Weser Stadium and the ever-improving interplay between Marvin Ducksch and Rafael Borré in attack are encouraging signs. In Gladbach, Borré initially put Werder ahead before Ducksch rescued at least a point at the end. Borussia had previously turned the game around.
Ducksch in particular has made a huge leap forward in his development in recent weeks and has long since become an integral part of the Bremen team as a leading player. But even he and veterans like Leonardo Bittencourt have so far been unable to prevent Werder from letting games slip out of their hands in poor phases. "That's the step we have to take: To absorb not-so-good phases better," said Bittencourt, who celebrates his 30th birthday on Tuesday.
Immediately after the final whistle in Gladbach, there was disappointment mixed in with Bremen's reactions. However, Werder were happy to take the one point from Borussia, who have been strong at home of late. "In terms of development, we can take positives from the last few weeks," said Werner. "And that's why we're going into the last game against Leipzig with confidence."
