FSG and shipping company sign contract for bunker ships

The shipping company Nordic Hamburg and Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) have signed a contract for the construction of two 110-meter LNG bunker ships. The shipyard's management, led by investor Lars Windhorst, described this as a milestone and a significant step for the company, which has recently made rather negative headlines due to late payment of wages, among other things. The refueling ships are to be built between 2024 and 2026, as the shipyard announced. According to previous information, they will be used to supply ships in German and European seaports with liquefied natural gas (LNG). According to FSG, the ships will also be equipped for ammonia and methanol.

Last year, shortly before Christmas, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck handed over three funding decisions totaling 62 million euros for three bunker ships to a consortium led by Nordic Hamburg. However, according to FSG, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine led to "dramatic price increases for materials and energy, which is why two ships were commissioned".

The contracting parties have agreed not to disclose the order volume. As is always the case with extensive shipbuilding contracts, further arrangements will have to be made after the contract is signed, as the shipyard announced.

This contract for bunker ships with Nordic Hamburg marks a significant milestone in the shipbuilding sector for Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG). The company, currently facing some challenges, will focus on the construction of two LNG bunker ships between 2024 and 2026.

The recent order for bunker ships from FSG demonstrates the continued importance of shipbuilding in fulfilling the energy needs of shipping companies, including the use of alternative fuels like LNG, ammonia, and methanol.
