Onset of winter - Frost and several centimeters of fresh snow in Saxony
It will remain wintry in Saxony on Sunday: in addition to frost and locally icy conditions, it may snow lightly until the afternoon, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). Up to three centimetres of fresh snow is possible, and even up to six centimetres on the northern edge of the low mountain ranges. Maximum temperatures will be between minus three and zero degrees, in the mountains between minus five and minus one degree.
On Monday night, temperatures will drop to minus seven degrees. Monday is expected to remain cloudy and dry, with temperatures similar to Sunday. There may be gusts of wind in the upper mountains and in Upper Lusatia. On Tuesday, some snow or rain will fall again, with slightly milder temperatures of minus one to three degrees.
Slippery roads have repeatedly led to accidents over the past few days. In Zwickau, for example, a 25-year-old female driver left the road on Saturday afternoon and drove into the ditch, as the police reported on Sunday. The woman sustained minor injuries in the accident and was treated as an outpatient in hospital, according to reports. Her car was a total loss.
Highway 72 had to be fully closed on Friday evening after a 62-year-old man left the road near Reichenbach (Vogtlandkreis) due to icy conditions and hit the crash barrier. The man was uninjured, but damage amounting to around 55,000 euros was caused.

The wintry conditions in Saxony on Sunday will provide a smooth driving experience for few, as frost and lightly falling snow are forecasted by the DWD. The Saxon Mountain country may see up to six centimeters of fresh snow, making the landscape picturesque but potentially hazardous. Despite the upcoming onset of winter, some may still long for days of warm weather, perhaps even dreaming of sunny Dresden. Despite the predicted snowfall, it's important to remain cautious on the roads, as icy conditions have led to accidents in areas such as Zwickau and Reichenbach.
