Exhibitions - From the children's rooms of yesteryear - doll's house show
Toys and treasures: The castle and playing card museum in Altenburg is showing historical doll's houses in its winter exhibition. Around 60 doll's houses from the private collection of the couple Frank and Hella Müller from Zwönitz in Saxony are on display, as the Altenburg museums announced on Thursday. The collection specializes in toys from the Ore Mountains, which were made between 1800 and 1900.
"Everyday scenes of domestic and public life are brought to life through doll's houses," it said. The exhibits provide a special insight into everyday life in the past. Parents often built the doll's houses themselves or at least repaired them. The doll's houses on display are often a mixture of styles: "Valuable pieces from wealthy households mixed with home-made items from less well-off families and restoration objects shape the character of the exhibits."
The doll's houses also give an idea of past role models. Women are often depicted as caring mothers in the living room or kitchen.
The exhibition "Four Walls for Small Hands - Doll's Houses from Two Centuries" can be seen from December 3, 2023 to March 3, 2024.
