Society - From prosthetic legs to caps: 50,000 found objects in the BVG lost and found office

Caps, bags, but also a few curiosities: this year, the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG ) have counted more than 50,000 found objects in their lost and found office on Warschauer Straße. That is slightly more than at the same time last year. "But we now have noticeably more passengers than in the pandemic years," said a spokesperson when asked by Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

The items were found at subway stations, stops, on buses and trains - according to BVG, around half of them were found in connection with bus travel. Incidentally, passengers forget more things during the day, which could also be due to the higher passenger numbers.

According to BVG, the numbers do not necessarily increase in winter, but there are differences between the seasons: More keys and smartphones are lost in summer, while more scarves, hats, gloves and umbrellas are lost in winter. Bags and rucksacks are among the most frequently found items in all months.

According to district councillor Matthias Steuckardt (CDU), the number of lost and found items in the Central Lost Property Office at the former Tempelhof Airport is also the same in winter and summer. In summer, many sunglasses are lost, while in winter, of course, hats, scarves and gloves tend to be left behind.

According to the BVG, there are always curious finds. The list ranges from prosthetic legs to large construction machines such as hammer drills. According to Matthias Steuckardt, however, which items are considered curious is in the eye of the beholder. His team occasionally has to smile at the fact that walking aids such as canes and walking frames are regularly handed in after events and concerts.

Only around 20 percent of lost property is returned to its owners, according to the BVG. In both lost and found offices, unclaimed items are sometimes auctioned off.
