Revival plan for a defunct initiative - From Berlin, untamed horses journey to Kazakhstan.
The Berlin Zoo posted four Przewalski wild horses on an excursion to Kazakhstan on Wednesday, marking the launch of an international reintroduction program. The zoo also brought three horses from Prague Zoo to join the team at the nature reserve Altyn Dala. Zoologischer Garten Berlin AG's target is to establish a herd of at least 40 Przewalski horses in their natural environment within the next five years.
On Wednesday afternoon, the horses were loaded onto a flight in BER Airport with a few layovers until they reached a closed airport near Arkalyk, with the help of the Czech military. The herd is under constant supervision by the accompanying veterinarian and zoo and Berlin Zoo director. Meanwhile, the three Przewalski horses from Prague had already made it to Kazakhstan.
According to Andreas Knieriem, the director of the Zoo and Berlin Zoo, wild horses are a crucial aspect of our natural heritage. Their return to Kazakhstan is a momentous achievement for the team's joint efforts. Berlin Zoo, along with Prague Zoo, acts as an official conservation center for this project and gathers wild horses to place them back in their homeland.
Two Przewalski foals were born in Berlin in late May and early June as well. The healthy foals are already bonding with their herd at the zoo.
