Friedman wants more empathy for Jews

Publicist Michel Friedman has criticized the fact that there is too little solidarity with Jews in Germany. "For the most part, I accuse the elites of behavior that has been very clear for days. And even though it's clear, it doesn't really spark in this society to simply stand up and say: "That's not on", said the 67-year-old on Thursday at a discussion evening on the topic of "Jew-hatred" at the Berliner Ensemble.

Guests included Thomas Haldenwang, head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, and Felix Klein, the German government's anti-Semitism commissioner. Most Jews are desperate because of anti-Semitic slogans and Stars of David that can be seen on the street, emphasized Friedman, who was born in Paris as the son of Polish Jews.

Last year, there was rightly empathy for the women in Iran and the people from Ukraine because of the Russian war of aggression. "But now something is happening in our midst," said the former Vice President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. Friedman conceded that many people had also become involved.

On Thursday, the theater in Berlin-Mitte hosted an additional event in the discussion series "Friedman in Conversation" to mark the 85th anniversary of the pogrom night. Among other things, it addressed the question of what needs to be done in the fight against hatred of Jews in Germany. On November 9, 1938 and afterwards, thugs in the Nazi state destroyed synagogues and Jewish businesses.

In the context of historical conflicts, the theater in Berlin-Mitte hosted a discussion on the fight against anti-Semitism, echoing the devastating pogroms of 1938. Despite the recent empathy shown towards women in Iran and victims of the Russian war, Judaism in Germany continues to face challenges and requires united efforts to combat hatred.
