Demonstration event - Fridays for Future Protests for Enhanced Climate Safety Measures
The climate movement "Fridays for Future" is organizing demonstrations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and around 100 actions across the country to bring attention to the climate crisis just nine days before European and local elections. In Greifswald, the protest will kick off at 3:00 p.m. with a gathering at the Muhlentor and culminate in a final rally at the market square. In Rostock, the march will commences at 4:00 p.m. at the Neuer Markt.
"It's undeniable: anyone seeking political office in the EU, in Vorpommern-Greifswald, or in local government needs a solid plan for dealing with the climate crisis," proclaimed "Fridays for Future" Greifswald. Both groups emphasized the pivotal role of the municipal election for climate-related efforts. "While the EU Parliament sets broad policies, the county council and city council are tasked with enacting greenhouse gas reduction measures," they noted.
The movement urges a European coal, oil, and gas exit by 2035, along with a doubling of investments in renewable energy and climate-friendly industries. "Fridays for Future" also urges young people to make a strong statement against right-wing politics through thoughtful voting. Notable protests and rallies are expected during these events in Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. These German climate strikes are part of a multi-day European climate protest movement.
