Frequent Train Delays: This App Reveals Improved Connectivity Options
The train's tardiness is a common occurrence. But what's the scoop on potential delays on your upcoming route? An app claims to spill the beans.
Time spent on train trips matters after ticket cost - reaching the destination swiftly and on time is a priority. However, this ain't always the case - for example, in May 2024, only 63.1% of IC and ICE trains made it on time without significant holdups.
Wondering about delays on your planned route? The app "Expected Arrival" provides the lowdown by crunching historical delay numbers from trains. Users can peek at how often specific connections are slowed down or nixed, and what average delay times to anticipate.
Predicting holdups, locating connections
For a certain connection, say, the app shows that 6 out of 10 trains on this track arrive on schedule. Opting for a later departure time might mean it's only 4 out of 10 trains - perhaps motivation to catch the early bird, as the odds of a holdup are lower?
"Expected Arrival" also boasts a search tool to suss out the most economical train connections. Essentially, several travel dates can be selected to find the best deals. This is super helpful for travelers with flexible schedules.
"Expected Arrival" is a freebie for iOS and Android devices.
Compensation for holdups
Generally, if a train touches down more than an hour late at its end point, you're due for a refund of 25% of the fare, and if it's over two hours late, 50%. Crucial: If a train's cancelation threatens to miss a linked flight, the rail company ain't responsible for any subsequent expenses.
As per the Consumer Center Baden-Württemberg, there's a loophole for travelers who've booked so-called Rail&Fly tickets through the airline. In these scenarios, the train trip to the airport is part of the flight booking, and the airline is tasked with setting up alternative transportation.
