European Championship referees Clément Turpin (l-r) from France and his assistant Benjamin Pagès, Daniel Siebert from Germany and his assistant Jan Seidel sit on a bench following the Uefa preparatory workshop for the European Football Championship. The EURO 2024 kicks off on June 14, 2024.

A man who's issued a red card to Thomas Müller before is set to be the referee for the opening match of Euro 2024. Clement Turpin, aged 42, will be the official for the host country Germany's game against Scotland. This was announced on the UEFA website, and the match would take place on a Friday at 9 PM in Munich Euro Arena.

Turpin brings up some bad memories for the Bayern players in the national team of Germany, as he previously sent Müller off with a red card in a Champions League game against Ajax Amsterdam in 2018. His reason for doing so was Müller's unintended Kung Fu kick on his opponent.

There were strong emotions created in Munich after the Champions League semifinal in 2023 between Bayern and Manchester City, with the score being tied at 1-1 at the Allianz Arena. The coach at the time, Thomas Tuchel, spoke against Turpin after the game, saying that it wasn't enough to proceed after the 0-3 loss in Manchester. "Only a Note 6" were Tuchel's words, and he was sent off the field by Turpin for his complaints on the sidelines.

Turpin was praised for a good show in the semi-final of the King's Class in Munich, with no criticism from Tuchel after the Bayern-Real Madrid match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Turpin has long been whistled at the international level. The team of Germany met him back in 2016 at the Euro, where he was the referee for their last group game against Northern Ireland at the Princes Park in Paris (1:0).

He is known for being a meticulous referee and is quick to give out yellow cards. The players from the national team have been cautioned about his actions, and Turpin is also committed to applying the new UEFA rule that only captains can step in to intervene with the referee on the field.
