Municipalities - Freisbach: New start after resignation and election
Four months after the political leadership of Freisbach resigned in protest against the state government's financial policy, the new mayor Jochen Ricklefs and 14 elected council members have taken office in the Palatinate town.
"Now I'm hoping for talks with the municipal supervisory authority about the budget soon," Ricklefs (non-party) told the German Press Agency on Wednesday. "I would be delighted if we could meet briefly this year to sound things out. But we should get started in January at the latest." The Germersheim district administration is responsible.
The mood at the constituent meeting on Tuesday evening was "cautiously positive", said Ricklefs. "It was very short, I was sworn in and 14 of the 16 council members took office. Two replacements are still to come."
The municipal council and the then mayor Peter Gauweiler (non-party) of Freisbach had announced their resignation on August 8. They had criticized the fact that the municipality with around 1,200 inhabitants was not receiving budget approval due to the new state financial equalization law and a new direction from the municipal supervisory authority.
In the new election in November, Ricklefs won with just under 72% of the vote against Andreas Ackermann (SPD, but independent candidate). Former council members were also re-elected. Whether they accept the mandate permanently will depend on whether Mainz moves on the financial issue.
