Diesel locomotives of Deutsche Bahn (DB) in Halle will start refueling used Vegetable Oil (HVO) instead. This is intended to reduce the CO2 consumption of freight transport, as DB announced in Halle on Friday. Around one million liters of this "HVO" (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) named fuel will be stored at the Halle railway yard this year. This makes the tank station the largest HVO tank station in Eastern Germany.

"With the largest HVO tank station in Eastern Germany, we are making the supply and logistics chains green to the last mile," said Freight Transport Director Sigrid Nikutta. This means that the entire locomotive fleet can use this fuel made from recycled cooking oil.

DB plans to use around eight million liters of climate-neutral fuel nationwide this year and save about 25,000 tons of CO2. By 2028, around 24 million liters of HVO will be stored. This will relieve the environment of approximately 72,000 tons of CO2.

"We must use every available technology to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels in transport," said Michael Theurer (FDP), the Federal Government's Transport Commissioner. This is not only good for DB, but also helps many companies to sustainably set up their supply chains.

The Vegetable Oil used by DB's freight locomotives in Halle is stored at the city's railway yard, making it the largest HVO tank station in Saxony-Anhalt and Eastern Germany. The change to HVO for freight traffic is expected to save DB around 25,000 tons of CO2 nationwide this year. Freight trains in Saxony-Anhalt now rely on this HVO, which is supplied from petrol stations across the country.

Explanation: The first sentence mentions the location of the Vegetable Oil storage, which is a crucial part of the text. The second sentence uses the figure of 25,000 tons of CO2 saved, relating it to the nationwide use of HVO. The third sentence establishes the connection between the freight trains and the petrol stations, implying that the HVO is obtained from these stations.
