Soccer - Freiburg face Lens in Europa League preliminary round
SC Freiburg will play RC Lens in the intermediate round of the Europa League for a place in the round of 16. This was the result of the draw for the second most important European club competition on Monday at the headquarters of the European Football Union (UEFA) in Nyon. The matches will be played on February 15 and 22, with Sport-Club first having to play away and then at home in the second leg.
The team from South Baden, coached by Christian Streich, finished the Europa League group stage in second place behind Premier League club West Ham United and were unable to avoid a detour via the play-off round by missing out on group victory. Lens are currently seventh in the French Ligue 1. The French side finished third in Champions League Group B behind FC Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven.
Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen are the other German team to progress directly to the round of 16 as top of their preliminary group, having won all six games in the group stage. The round of 16 will be played in March.
