Bundesliga - Freiburg captain Günter hopes to return soon
Long-injured captain Christian Günter hopes to return to team training at SC Freiburg in January. "I'm back on the pitch, I can train with the ball again and get my fitness back," said the 30-year-old on the stadium microphone ahead of the South Baden side's Bundesliga match against 1. FC Köln on Sunday. The doctors would have to decide when he could return: "It all depends on the healing, on the bones."
Günter has suffered two consecutive forearm fractures and has been out for almost four months. "I'm doing quite well again now," said the left-back. The time was "very, very hard". Günter is also not going away during the winter break as his wife is expecting their second child. The international is hoping to be able to play for the Breisgau side again in the intermediate round of the Europa League, which will be drawn this Monday.
"It wasn't funny what happened over the months. He had several operations. That's why we're extremely happy that he's feeling better," said the SC coach on Sunday on the sidelines of the Bundesliga match against 1. FC Köln on DAZN.
According to Streich, it's now a matter of building up his muscles and working on his fitness. "Then he can get back into team training. I don't want to make any predictions. Now we hope it continues like this," said Streich.
