Freezing rain: Munich Airport temporarily suspends operations on Tuesday
According to its own information, the airport intends to use the first half of the day on Tuesday to de-ice the operating areas in the event of the forecast freezing rain. Air traffic should then resume from midday, but there could still be restrictions and flight cancellations, the airport said.
In view of the winter weather in southern Germany, Deutsche Bahn (DB) also warned of further severe disruptions to rail services. Passengers should expect restrictions until December 6, the railroad announced via the online service X, formerly Twitter. In the greater Munich area alone, more than 80 overhead line faults had to be repaired on Monday.
According to DB, all trains on the Munich - Salzburg, Munich - Innsbruck and Munich - Lindau/Zurich routes are currently canceled. In addition, Munich Central Station can only be served to a limited extent, which is why only a few long-distance trains are running there, it said. Passengers are advised to postpone their journeys to and from Munich.
Heavy snowfall over the weekend had led to considerable traffic disruptions in parts of southern Germany and especially in Bavaria. The airport in the state capital of Munich ceased operations and the main railway station was also closed. S-Bahn trains, buses and streetcars did not run. In many places, the authorities called on people to stay at home for safety reasons.
