- Free voters reject criticism of voting in Lunzenau
After the election of a representative of the far-right Free Saxony as the second deputy mayor in Lunzenau (district of Mittelsachsen), the Free Voters faction there dismissed criticism, for example from the Left. The appointment reflects the voters' will, explained faction spokesman Alexander Putzschke. The deputy mayors elected by the city council were those who had received the most votes in the city council election.
At the beginning of the week, the council elected a city councilor of the Free Voters and a city councilor of Free Saxony as deputy mayors. The CDU, which has the largest faction, did not receive any seats. Putzschke said he assumes that the candidate from Free Saxony received votes from his faction, but pointed out that the election was secret.
Left state parliamentarian Kerstin Kötitz had spoken on Twitter of "eerie alliances". The state association of Free Voters, to which the faction in the Lunzenau city council does not belong, had also clearly distanced itself from the events there.
The Lunzenau municipal council's decision to elect a Free Saxony representative as deputy mayor sparked debate within the Left faction. This action aligned with the results of the city council election, where deputies were chosen based on their vote counts.
