Free Voters Group faces an unclear future

The future of the state parliamentary group of the Free Voters in Brandenburg remains unclear due to the announced resignation of MP Philip Zeschmann. According to the German Press Agency, talks between Zeschmann and parliamentary group leader Péter Vida have so far been unsuccessful. For him, the relationship of trust has been "destroyed and is difficult to restore", said Zeschmann. "However, this is the prerequisite for any form of cooperation." There had been several talks with Vida, on Monday and in recent weeks and months.

The MP had justified his move with incompatibilities in the cooperation with the parliamentary group leader. Vida hopes to be able to keep Zeschmann in the parliamentary group. Parliament is examining legal issues and possible consequences resulting from a withdrawal.

Parliamentary groups have at least five members. The Free Voters entered the state parliament in 2019 with 5.0 percent. The BVB/Free Voters parliamentary group currently has exactly five members. A parliamentary group can also consist of just four members if it receives at least five percent of the second votes in the state election.

The resignation of MP Philip Zeschmann threatens the future of the Free Voters' parliamentary group in Brandenburg, as his departure would potentially leave them with fewer than the required five members. Despite ongoing talks between Zeschmann and parliamentary group leader Péter Vida, the damaged trust between them seems to hinder any potential cooperation.
