Politics - Free voters: Grimma mayor as top candidate

The mayor of Grimma is to lead the Free Voters (FW) in Saxony as the top candidate in the 2024 state elections. Matthias Berger (non-party) is the ideal candidate, said FW state leader Thomas Weidinger on Friday in Grimma at the nomination by the state executive committee. The 55-year-old represents the party's bet: "free of ideology, citizen-oriented politics and a consistent focus on the needs of the people". Berger still has to be confirmed at the state party conference in Grimma on February 3.

Berger became full-time mayor in 2001 and has been mayor of the city of Grimma since 2008. He had noticed that people had lost faith and trust in the current party system and increasingly in the state as a whole, Berger said on Friday according to a press release. "I am convinced that change is needed and the Free Voters stand for this change."

The Free Voters (FW) in Saxony have focused on rural areas and municipal finances in their program for the 2024 state election. Other priorities include education and family, the economy and internal security. In the 2019 state election, the Free Voters missed out on a place in parliament with 3.4% of the second votes.
