Fraudsters make six-figure haul in Upper Franconia
Fraudsters have stolen money and valuables twice in Upper Franconia using the so-called accident scam. The total loss in the incidents on Tuesday amounted to a low six-figure sum, as the police announced on Wednesday.
Around midday, fraudsters called a 58-year-old woman from Frensdorf (Bamberg district). They pretended that the woman's daughter had caused a traffic accident. So that the daughter would not go to prison, the 58-year-old was supposed to pay a deposit. A little later, a man collected items with a value in the five-figure range from the woman's address.
Using the same scam, fraudsters persuaded a 68-year-old man from Bayreuth to hand over a supposed bail money to allegedly save his wife from going to prison. At a parking lot on Tuesday afternoon, a stranger first collected money and later valuables. The criminal investigation department is investigating the incidents in Frensdorf and Bayreuth and is looking for possible witnesses.
The incidents of fraud using the accident scam in Upper Franconia have raised concerns about increasing crime in the region. In fact, these scams have resulted in significant financial losses, with one such incident resulting in a high five-figure sum in Frensdorf.
