Animals - Frankfurt's lions have a new outdoor facility
Doubled in size with many extras: The lion pair at the Frankfurt Zoo has had a new outdoor enclosure since Tuesday. The big cats Kumar and Zarina now have over 1,000 square meters outside instead of the nearly 500 square meters they had before the renovation. The old moat is gone, replaced by a diverse landscape - including a heated rock.
The renovation cost around 2.2 million Euros and took almost two years to complete. Visitors can observe the animals from three points: From a wooden balcony, groups can view the entire enclosure from a bird's eye perspective. At point two, visitors stand in a grotto framed by art rocks. At point three, viewers observe the lions as if from a cave. Humans and lions are only separated by glass panels.
At the Frankfurt Zoo, there live two Asian lions. During the renovation, the animals lived behind the scenes of the zoo and were not visible to visitors. Kumar is 18 years old, while Zarina is six years younger. She did not come out for the official opening on Tuesday morning, Kumar took a few steps outside, impressed with his roar, and then lay down right away. Zoo Director Christina Geiger spoke of an "retirement home" for Kumar's age.
