Traffic - Frankfurt introduces 20 km/h in the city center

In future, a maximum speed limit of 20 km/h will be permitted in parts of Frankfurt city center. Head of Traffic Wolfgang Siefert (Greens) will put up the first sign this Tuesday (12.30 pm).

The first step will be in the area around the stock exchange. Up to now, there has been a mix of 50 km/h, 30 km/h, traffic-calmed areas and pedestrian zones. "We want to make this simpler, more comprehensible, safer and more compatible with the city," said Siefert in advance.

The city center is characterized by necessary destination and delivery traffic by car, but above all it is a public space with many pedestrians and cyclists who move around and spend time there. For this reason, a uniformly regulated traffic-calmed area will be established.

"Große Eschenheimer Straße, Schillerstraße, Rahmhofstraße and Biebergasse will therefore become Frankfurt's first traffic-calmed business area to be signposted as a 20 km/h zone," said Siefert. The Green politician will explain which other areas will follow on Tuesday.

This new traffic rule will primarily affect the city center of Frankfurt, as a 20 km/h speed limit will be implemented in specific areas. This change is part of a broader initiative to make the city center safer and more pedestrian-friendly, with key streets such as Große Eschenheimer Straße, Schillerstraße, Rahmhofstraße, and Biebergasse receiving the first 20 km/h signage. The municipality of Frankfurt, located in the state of Hesse, is committed to improving traffic management and promoting sustainable mobility within its urban centers.
