Municipalities - Frankfurt considers building lightweight halls for refugees

The city of Frankfurt is considering the construction of lightweight halls as temporary accommodation for refugees. "We urgently need such halls as an interim solution so that we can continue to meet our obligation to accept and accommodate refugees", said Elke Voitl (Greens), Head of Social Affairs, on Tuesday.

Concrete proposals for possible locations are to be drawn up this week. Planning will take place with the municipal authorities and the relevant departments. The advantages of these halls are that they can be erected quickly, are relatively inexpensive and can also provide shelter for a large number of people in winter, she said.

According to the city, the state of Hesse is currently allocating fewer refugees to Frankfurt than previously announced. This shortfall may have to be made up in 2024, said Voitl. "We assume that more refugees will be brought to Frankfurt at the beginning of the year as a result. We must and will be prepared for this." The department assumes that the current capacities will probably be exhausted in the second week of January.

Until then, the places in the existing facilities will be increased as far as possible. According to the plans, additional hotels will also be rented "if they are offered to the city at acceptable prices", as Voitl explained.

According to the department, the halls are thermally insulated accommodation"similar to that used in industry or as warehouses". They could be modularly and individually expanded and equipped with heating and sanitary facilities. It was not initially possible to provide any information on specific costs.

According to the department, it is not yet clear which sites are suitable for the construction of the halls. The offices involved have been instructed to suggest possible sites.
