Frankfurt city council wants "cultural mile" stage variant

The Frankfurt City Council has decided that the opera house will be rebuilt at its current location. With this decision, "a first milestone in the major stage project" has been reached, announced Ina Hartwig (SPD), Head of Cultural Affairs, on Friday. The city council still has to approve the decision.

The theater is to be rebuilt on Neue Mainzer Straße. Both theaters are currently housed in a joint building on Willy-Brandt-Platz. The demolition of this building has already been decided. The location of the new buildings has been debated for years. Now the "cultural mile" option is coming closer.

According to the magistrate's decision, "detailed negotiations for the cultural mile" are to be initiated with the property owners, Hessische Landesbank and Sparkasse. The aim is to submit a leasehold contract to the city councillors for a decision.

An open space of around 700 square meters is to be built next to the new theater. The stages are also to have a new storage and logistics center. Materials are currently stored in various locations across the city. A location for this is still being sought. The search for a location for an interim building to which the theater can relocate during the construction work will now also begin.

The redevelopment of the theater on Neue Mainzer Straße aligns with the City Council's vision for a "cultural mile". Various municipalities in the region have expressed interest in collaborating to create a shared cultural experience, potentially involving opera performances at the new theater.
