- Frankfurt Airport without power for hours

Following a prolonged power outage overnight on Monday, there may still be delays and flight cancellations at Frankfurt Airport throughout the day. Flights operated by airlines such as Discover Airlines and Lufthansa could be affected, according to a spokesperson for airport operator Fraport. Passengers are advised to check their flight status in advance.

** Preliminary investigations suggest that a transformer failure at a substation caused the power outage. The incident occurred around 11:00 PM, coinciding with the start of the night flight ban. The backup power supply, which provides power to all safety-critical systems, kicked in, the spokesperson said. At no point was the safety of Germany's largest airport compromised.**

The power outage affected areas A and partly B in Terminal 1 of the airport, which is primarily used by Lufthansa. Power was restored around 3:30 AM, before the resumption of regular flight operations at 5:00 AM.

There may still be issues with check-in machines at Lufthansa, requiring manual baggage handling, the spokesperson said. While Tuesday is not a peak day with around 189,000 expected passengers and 1,242 flight movements, disruptions are still inconvenient, especially for passengers traveling during peak morning hours and the holiday season.

The power outage was caused by a transformer failure, specifically in the electrical system. The backup power supply kept safety-critical systems functioning throughout the outage.
