Frankfurt Airport praises its security concept

Hours-long disruption of flight operations at Frankfurt airport by Last Generation. Airport operator calls its security measures "extremely solid" despite this. No one was harmed.

The Frankfurt airport operator Fraport is holding firm to its security concept after the glue attack by climate demonstrators at its facility. The overall operation functioned "extremely solidly" on Thursday morning, according to a company spokesperson. Flight operations at the largest German airport were brought back to order in the morning after over 250 cancellations from the previous day.

Despite the restrictions on flight operations, no one was harmed, as the multi-layered system took effect, the Fraport spokesperson said. An alarm was triggered immediately after the illegal fence was crossed, and response teams were dispatched, taking into account the large area. However, demonstrators had already glued themselves to the ground at several locations.

Flight operations were immediately halted on Thursday morning to avoid endangering lives. Fraport CEO Stefan Schulte commented on LinkedIn: "Thanks to good coordination and the quick response of the emergency teams, no one was harmed - and that's definitely the most important thing." The incident will be reviewed and discussed with security personnel, the Fraport spokesperson added. However, it is still too early to name specific measures.

"We cannot control 350 kilometers of German airport fence"

The Airports Association ADV expressed skepticism about possible political directives regarding airport security provisions being worked on by Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and the states. "We cannot control 350 kilometers of German airport fence. In other words, a surveillance system like along the inner German border is not realistic," ADV CEO Ralph Beisel told T-Online.

The eight activists from the Last Generation group, who were arrested on Thursday, were released by the police. They were all men and women, as well as two non-binary individuals, aged between 20 and 44. They are now required to answer for the suspicion of endangering air traffic, trespassing, property damage, and violating the Assembly Act.

The incident at Frankfurt am Main's airport, causing significant disruptions to aviation, was orchestrated by the activist group Last Generation. Despite the challenges, Fraport, the airport operator, maintained that its security measures were "extremely solid."

Fraport's ceaseless commitment to ensuring safety was evident during the incident, as demonstrated by the quick response of emergency teams, resulting in no harm to anyone.
