Franconian cubes are awarded
On November 11, not only fools and jesters celebrate - but also three personalities from Franconia: because on this date, the Franconian Cube is traditionally awarded. The government of Upper Franconia announced in advance that the award winners should express the witty, humorous and contradictory nature of the Franconian character.
Since 1985, the Frankenwürfel has been awarded annually to three to five personalities from the three Franconian administrative districts. This year's award ceremony will take place on Saturday (11.00 a.m.) in Thurnau (Kulmbach district) in Upper Franconia. However, the reason for the date of November 11 is not the start of the carnival season, but rather the commemoration day of St. Martin, who is considered the patron saint of the old Franconian kingdom.
The three award winners were encouraged to reflect the humorous and contradictory nature of the Franconian character, which is often honored through the annual Franconian Cube Awards. Despite being known for the celebrations of fools and jesters on November 11, the actual reason for honoring the Franconian Cube winners on this date is in commemoration of St. Martin, the patron saint of the old Franconian kingdom.
