Municipalities - Four new mayors to be elected in the southwest

Major campaign day in the town halls and polling stations of four south-west municipalities: the mayoral elections are on Sunday in the towns of Ulm, Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Herrenberg and Rheinstetten. The polling stations are open from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm. If, in the first round, none of the candidates in the city in which they are running can win more than 50 percent of the vote, there is usually a run-off election two weeks later.

In Ulm, around 94,000 people are entitled to vote to determine their Lord Mayor. For incumbent Gunter Czisch (CDU), this is his second term in office. He is being challenged by Lena Schwelling (Greens) and Martin Ansbacher (SPD). All three live in Ulm. Czisch has been Lord Mayor of the city on the Danube with a population of just under 127,000 since 2016. He was previously the city's finance mayor. In the last mayoral election, he succeeded Ivo Gönner (SPD), who vacated the town hall chair after around 24 years. Two non-party candidates, Daniel Langhans and Thomas Treutler, have also thrown their hats into the ring.

In Leinfelden-Echterdingen (Esslingen district), five men and one woman will be vying for the town hall chair on Sunday: the mayor of Köngen (Esslingen district), Otto Ruppaner, who was born in 1982 and is supported by the Free Voters. Also standing for election are 38-year-old city councillor David Armbruster, who is supported by the Green Party, and ministerial councillor Raiko Grieb (45). Grieb is a member of the SPD and is supported by the SPD, but is running as an independent candidate.

Also standing for election are management consultant Martin Weiß (non-party), born in 1966, Peter Stahl (46), who works in product development, and 50-year-old Birgit Mertens (non-party). Mertens is currently mayor of Niefern-Öschelbronn (Enzkreis). The 71-year-old incumbent Roland Klenk(CDU) is no longer standing. Around 31,000 citizens are being called to vote.

Around 25,500 people can vote in Herrenberg (Böblingen district). Three men and one woman have thrown their hats into the ring for the office: 32-year-old public administrator Nico Reith, 52-year-old vehicle painter Hubert Reichardt, entrepreneur Thomas Werner and Diana Kobrow (43). All candidates are non-partisan, according to a city spokeswoman. Incumbent Thomas Sprißler (57/Free Voters) is not standing again after two terms in office.

In Rheinstetten (Karlsruhe district), two candidates, incumbent Sebastian Schrempp (CDU) and SPD member Isabella Metzke, will enter the race for mayor on Sunday. Metzke, 29, is running as an independent candidate. Schrempp, 45, was elected mayor of the city in 2007 - the youngest mayor in the south-west at the time. Around 17,000 citizens are eligible to vote.

Mayoral elections in Baden-Württemberg generally take place independently of the municipal council elections. Only in independent cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants - called urban districts - and so-called large district towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants are the heads of the town hall referred to as Lord Mayors.
