- Four key points from the Union Berlin match at FSV Mainz 05:

Union Berlin's new manager Bo Svensson has a history with Mainz 05. He played as a defender for the team from 2007 to 2014, making 122 appearances. Later, he served as a co- or youth coach in Mainz from 2015 to 2017. Then, from January 4, 2021, to November 2, 2023, he led the Mainz side in 104 games. Notably, Union's assistant coach Babak Keyhanfar and analyst Tijan Nije also previously worked with Mainz.

Intrigue: For the first time in their Bundesliga history, Union is starting the first matchday away. Previously, they had always kicked off the season at home.

Vengeance: Similar to the first matchday last season, Union faces Mainz again. On August 20, 2023, Union clinched third place with a thrilling 4:1 victory, thanks to a hat-trick from Kevin Behrens (now with VfL Wolfsburg) and a goal from Milos Pantovic (now with KSV Eupen). Union's goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow saved two penalties, both taken by Mainz's Ludovic Ajorque (now with Stade Brest). Ultimately, both teams managed to maintain their Bundesliga status.

History: Union has only suffered one loss against Mainz in the Bundesliga so far. Away, they have two victories, two draws, and one loss from February 6, 2021 (0:1). Currently, Mainz boasts an unbeaten streak of nine Bundesliga games.

I'm not planning to reveal Union Berlin's tactics for the upcoming match against Mainz, as our history with them is complex and emotional. [I'm not going to.] During our last encounter, Union secured a comfortable 4-1 victory, but we know Mainz will be seeking revenge.
