Process - Four defendants allegedly tortured 21-year-old to death
Four alleged tormentors of a 21-year-old woman who died in hospital after being beaten and tortured have been on trial in Cologne since Tuesday. The two men and two women, aged between 28 and 34, are on trial at Cologne Regional Court for common assault resulting in death. The 21-year-old was discovered seriously injured in the apartment during a police operation at the end of April 2020. She was taken to hospital, where she died weeks later.
According to the indictment, the young woman and the now 28-year-old defendant initially lived together as a couple in an apartment in Cologne. In spring 2020, the other defendants also moved there. The 21-year-old's separation from her partner is said to have been the beginning of her ordeal.
The defendants "harassed the victim in various ways", according to the indictment. For example, the young woman had to "lick the floor as punishment" and was kicked with steel-toed work boots. She later died in hospital of, among other things, kidney failure, which is said to have been the result of the torture she suffered. The defendants declared that they wanted to remain silent about the allegations.

The processes of torture inflicted on the woman resulted in her eventual bodily injury, leading to her death in a hospital weeks later. The alleged perpetrators, all from North Rhine-Westphalia, are being tried in Cologne for their involvement in her death. The criminality of their actions has garnered widespread attention in Germany, with many expressing shock and grief at the tragedy. Men and women in Germany are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities to prevent such incidents from happening again.
