Former Left Party politician King leaves parliamentary group
Berlin politician Alexander King has left the Left Party parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives. King announced his resignation from the parliamentary group with effect from Tuesday, according to a parliamentary group spokesperson. King had announced in October that he would be leaving the Left Party and joining the new party of ex-leftist Sahra Wagenknecht.
He wants to keep his seat in the House of Representatives for the time being, as he told the German Press Agency on Tuesday. According to King, he wants to make this dependent on whether he can also achieve his political goals as an individual member of parliament. The parliamentary group chairs Anne Helm and Carsten Schatz as well as representatives of the party leadership had already asked him in October to resign his seat and thus clear the way for a successor from the ranks of the Left Party.
Following his resignation, the Left Party parliamentary group still has 21 members. It is the fourth largest of the five parliamentary groups in the House of Representatives.
King joined Sahra Wagenknecht's new party after leaving the Left Party parliamentary group in the House of Representatives. Despite his resignation, he aims to maintain his seat in the House of Representatives, contingent on achieving his political objectives as an individual legislator.
