Former football international Lewis Holtby is the new captain of Bundesliga newcomers Holstein Kiel. Coach Marcel Rapp has appointed the 33-year-old midfielder as the successor to Philipp Sander. The Kiel club announced this on Friday. Sander had moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach after the club's first-ever promotion to the Bundesliga.

Holtby joined Kiel in 2021, having previously played for clubs such as Schalke 04, Hamburger SV, Tottenham Hotspur, and Blackburn Rovers. Between 2010 and 2012, Holtby earned three caps for the German national team under coach Joachim Löw.
