- Former Dutch international Holtby new captain of Holstein Kiel
Former football international Lewis Holtby is the new captain of Bundesliga newcomers Holstein Kiel. Coach Marcel Rapp has appointed the 33-year-old midfielder as the successor to Philipp Sander. The Kiel club announced this on Friday. Sander had moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach after the club's first-ever promotion to the Bundesliga.
Holtby joined Kiel in 2021, having previously played for clubs such as Schalke 04, Hamburger SV, Tottenham Hotspur, and Blackburn Rovers. Between 2010 and 2012, Holtby earned three caps for the German national team under coach Joachim Löw.
The new captain of Holstein Kiel's football league debut is Lewis Holtby, following the departure of Philipp Sander to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Holtby's leadership in the Bundesliga league will be crucial for Kiel as they navigate their first season in the top tier.
