Former democratic congressmembers urge Biden to retreat

We are confident that one or more qualified democratic candidates will run, write the signatories in the letter addressed to the "American people," as quoted by the news portal "Politico." The "integrity and vision" of the President remain unchanged, Democrats emphasize in their writing. "However, the energy and stamina required by the President for the campaign and another term are no longer present."

Biden came under heavy pressure after his disheveled and chaotic performance in the television debate with his opponent Donald Trump at the end of June. At 81 years old, the oldest President in US history is now facing an increasingly heated debate over his physical and mental fitness for the Presidency - even within his own party. In a series of public appearances this week, Biden tried to dispel doubts. Most recently, he confirmed at a Detroit appearance on Friday that he would remain in the race.

In their open letter, the 24 former Congress members made it clear that they were not only concerned about the Presidency, but also about the Congress falling into the hands of the Republicans. If "the worst happens and we are confronted with another term of Trump," the Democrats would at least need the Congress "to protect our freedom and the rule of law" from complete control by the Republicans.
