Former assistant Matarazzo surprised by criticism of Nagelsmann
Hoffenheim head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo cannot understand the harsh criticism of his former boss and current national coach Julian Nagelsmann. "I'm surprised at how quickly it all happened and how everything has turned around," said Matarazzo at TSG 1899's matchday press conference on Friday. The 45-year-old coach was Nagelsmann's assistant in the 2018/19 season and has a good relationship with him.
Nagelsmann had been criticized in recent days following the defeats against Turkey (2:3) and in Austria (0:2). It was not just about the results, but also about the often complex approach of the former Bayern coach. "Julian communicates his approach well. Communication is one of his greatest strengths. I can understand everything he does," said Matarazzo. Nagelsmann and the DFB squad do not have any more test matches until March. The home European Championship will then begin on June 14 with the opening match in Munich.
Despite his current role leading Hoffenheim, Matarazzo still follows the performances of his former national team coach Nagelsmann in the Bundesliga. His professional relationship with Nagelsmann dates back to their time together at RB Leipzig, where Matarazzo served as an assistant coach during the 2017/18 season.
