Environment - Forestry must pay fee for water extraction

The extraction of groundwater and surface water by agriculture and forestry will be subject to a charge in Rhineland-Palatinate in future. Environment Minister Katrin Eder (Greens) cited the increasing scarcity of water in times of climate change and the droughts of recent years as justification for the new legal regulation in the Mainz state parliament on Thursday. The opposition factions of the CDU, Freie Wähler and AfD voted against the new regulation.

The water abstraction charge was introduced in Rhineland-Palatinate at the beginning of 2013. Since then, however, the extraction of groundwater and water from surface waters for irrigation in agriculture and forestry has continued to be free of charge. The future revenue is to be earmarked for measures to conserve irrigation water. For water and soil associations, the rate is to be reduced by half.

Speakers from the opposition factions criticized the burden placed on Rhineland-Palatinate farmers and winegrowers by the water abstraction charge. The new regulation has no steering effect.
