Preserving and protecting natural habitats - Forest Service Reports Lesser Extent of Forest Burning

Rainy weather has helped keep the number of forest fires lower compared to previous years. The State Forestry Authority shared this information on a Wednesday update. Five fires between March and May only consumed an area about the size of a soccer field (0.32 hectares). This is a strong improvement considering the forest burns that covered 0.29 hectares the previous year and 1.06 hectares the year before that. Back in 2020, four hectares were affected by forest fires from March to May, and in 2019, 18 hectares were destroyed.

Besides the rainy weather as the main cause for fewer forest fires, Volker Gebhardt, ThuringenForst's managing director, acknowledged the role of the state government's financial support and firefighting technology in relating to the forest fires. He emphasized that the 24 foresters in the state are well equipped for any future occurrences. Additionally, he reminded the public that smoking is not allowed in the forests and that driving on forest roads should be avoided. This helps the fire department to reach the fire site more easily in case of emergencies.

In reality, spring, like summer, is when forest fires pose a significant risk due to the presence of dry grass and an abundance of old, potentially dry leaves in the forests. These can easily catch fire.

Covering approximately a third of the Thuringian state area, which is around 550,000 hectares, forests are vital to the state, as stated by Thuringenforst.

The State Forestry Authority's report shows a notable decrease in forest fires in Thuringia, with only 0.32 hectares burned between March and May, compared to 1.06 hectares the year prior. This reduction in forest fires is beneficial for nature conservation efforts in Erfurt, a city located within Thuringia's forest area.

Volker Gebhardt, ThuringenForst's managing director, credits the state government's financial support and advanced firefighting technology for aiding in the reduction of forest fires in Thuringia. The forest service in Thuringia has 24 highly equipped foresters ready to tackle any future forest fires.

Thuringia's vast forest area, covering approximately 550,000 hectares, contributes significantly to the state's nature conservation efforts. These forests not only serve as vital natural habitats but also attract tourists interested in experiencing the beauty of Thuringia's forestry and its connection to nature.
