Nature - Forest fire danger increases in Saxony

The forest fire risk in Saxony is increasing. According to a overview of the state enterprise Sachsenforst released on Wednesday, danger levels have risen in all parts of the state. The highest danger level with a rating of 4 out of 5 currently exists in the forests of Dresden city and the Dresden Heath, as well as in the central part of the Bautzen district.

For wide parts of the federal state, Sachsenforst sees a medium risk. In the south of the Görlitz district, there is a low risk. The situation was significantly calmer on Sunday: Throughout the entire state, only low to very low forest fire danger was in effect.

In the first five months of this year, 47 forest fires have been reported in the state. According to Sachsenforst, the weather in April was responsible for the current number being higher than in 2023, with only 26 forest fires at that time.

Overview Forest Fire Risk

  1. This weekend, it's crucial to be aware of the forest fire danger in Saxony, particularly in areas like Dresden city, Dresden Heath, and the central part of Bautzen district, where the risk is rated at highest level.
  2. The number of forest fires reported in Saxony this year has already surpassed the numbers from 2023, due in part to adverse weather conditions in April.
  3. As the climate warms and weather patterns become unpredictable, the environmental impact on Saxony's forests and agriculture becomes increasingly significant, particularly during high-risk periods.
  4. Despite the current high risk, there are still beautiful natural regions in Saxony, such as the forests around Pirna, that offer a chance to escape for a weekend and enjoy the beauty of nature, just be sure to exercise caution.
  5. Sachsenforst, the state enterprise responsible for forest management, has issued an alert for the entire state, asking individuals to do their part in preventing forest fires by disposing of cigarettes properly, avoiding open fires during dry spells, and reporting any suspicious activities in forests.
