Upcoming votes in Europe - For the first time, youth in Hesse get to elect a parliament.

For the very first time, teenagers in Hessen get to select the makeup of a parliament during the European election on June 9th. At the age of 16 or 17, they have the liberty to place a mark on the ballot paper, out of the 34 political parties and organizations present. According to Hessen's statistical office, there could be approximately 4.85 million voters eligible for voting in this federal state, with around 100,000 falling into the age bracket of 16 and 17.

In usual circumstances, the legal laws of Hessen restrict those under 18 from participating in regional and federal elections. However, the European election isn't held by these parameters. Rather, the specific voting laws of individual EU nations are employed. And it's been proclaimed that, as of the legislative period in November 2022, any German youths above 16, along with their contemporaries hailing from other European Union states, now have the liberation to cast their votes in the European Parliament election.

In this unprecedented scenario, the European elections in June will allow 16 and 17-year-olds in Hesse, a part of Europe, to exercise their voting rights. This change is in line with the EU's legislative framework, as each EU nation sets its own voting laws for these elections. The upcoming European elections in Wiesbaden, the capital of Hesse, are expected to engage a considerable number of voters, including the newly eligible younger generation.
