Out of the roughly 1.7 million voters in Thuringia qualified for the European election, around 1.3 million citizens can still make their choice for their district administrator or mayor on Sunday. In fifteen districts and free cities, a second round of voting will take place, while people in the state will also determine the makeup of the European Parliament. The voting stations in Thuringia will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Additionally, in some municipalities, there are also runoff elections for mayor's seats.

The eastern part of Thuringia, specifically Altenburger Land, saw an AfD candidate ahead in the first round of voting as the sole area.
