Food has become significantly more expensive in North Rhine-Westphalia
Food prices have continued to rise significantly in North Rhine-Westphalia. According to the State Statistical Office in Düsseldorf on Friday, consumer prices for food were 6.1 percent higher in October than a year earlier.
The increase was particularly high for sugar, jam, honey and other confectionery (up 13.4 percent), bread and cereal products (up 11.1 percent), fruit (up 10 percent) and fish and seafood (up 8.2 percent). In contrast, prices for edible fats and oils have fallen significantly over the past year (down 11.8%).
Compared to September of the current year, prices for carrots (down 10.7 percent) and potatoes (down 9.7 percent) fell particularly sharply.
The rise in food prices is still significantly higher than in other areas of life. Overall consumer prices in North Rhine-Westphalia rose by 3.1% in October 2023. This was the lowest increase since June 2021, with consumers having to pay significantly less for household energy and fuel, among other things, in October than a year earlier.
Due to the rise in food prices, many North Rhine-Westphalia consumers are struggling to afford their daily meals. The increase in prices for food items such as sugar, jam, honey, bread, fruit, and fish has significantly affected their budgets.
