Could Marc-André ter Stegen potentially supersede Manuel Neuer as the primary goalkeeper for the German national team (DFB-Tor)?

- Following the transition, who emerges as Germany's leading figure of authority?

Manuel Neuer has bid farewell to his reign in the German national team. After an impressive eight major tournaments as the primary goalkeeper, the 38-year-old 2014 World Cup winner is calling it quits from international football, choosing to continue his career solely with FC Bayern Munich. Who will take over his mantle in the German national team?

Marc-André ter Stegen

Looking at potential contenders, Marc-André ter Stegen (32) from FC Barcelona seems the most likely to fill Neuer's shoes. Despite spending years in the shadows in the national team, it seems it's now ter Stegen's time to shine. Even during the Euros this summer, he couldn't dethrone Neuer after his injury layoff and was relegated to the bench once again. Nevertheless, ter Stegen boasts a total of 40 appearances for Germany and has the most experience out of all the contenders.

Kevin Trapp

Kevin Trapp (34) from Eintracht Frankfurt also boasts a decent amount of experience. However, his omission from the Euro squad seemed to favor Oliver Baumann (34) from TSG Hoffenheim, which could suggest that Trapp isn't favored for the top spot. Trapp has earned nine caps, the same as Bernd Leno (32) from FC Fulham. While they may be considered for the squad, they're unlikely to pose a significant challenge to ter Stegen. Perhaps Stefan Ortega (Manchester City's secondary goalkeeper) might also get a chance.

Alexander Nübel

Alexander Nübel had a significant impact for VfB Stuttgart during their championship run last season, according to coach Sebastian Hoeneß. Despite being overlooked for Nagelsmann's Euro squad, he was brought in for the preparatory activities. The DFB has kept an eye on him, and if he can push his promising performance in the 11 clean sheets he recorded during the previous Bundesliga season, he might finally make his mark for the national team.

Noah Atubolu

Noah Atubolu, at 22, from SC Freiburg boasted a stellar season, keeping a clean sheet 10 times - only two keepers performed better in the league. Despite his impressive performance in his inaugural Bundesliga campaign, the young goalkeeper has faced criticism, which has disappointed his former coach, Christian Streich. "It's hard to miss the outstanding performances and potential demonstrated by Atubolu," Streich remarked. While he isn't yet a strong contender for the top spot, and has yet to debut for the men's national team, Atubolu may become a valuable addition to the DFB squad in the future.

The Commission has expressed interest in the potential shift in the German national team goalkeeping position, with Manuel Neuer's departure. Marc-André ter Stegen, with his decade-long experience and 40 appearances for Germany, is highly favored to take over the mantle from Neuer.
