Shifting Migration Strategy

Following the devastating attack in Solingen, Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck is advocating for a "shift in migration policies". "Solingen serves as a wake-up call for the federal government," the CDU politician told DPA. Unregulated migration poses a security threat, he stated, and the federal government must work towards "deporting a significantly larger number of individuals without valid permits."

Protecting Liberty

In addition to changing migration policies, Poseck suggested strengthening gun laws for enhanced population security. "It's about a holistic approach to more security now. One measure alone won't suffice, but with a combination of measures, we will achieve more security," he said. This might involve establishing additional gun-free zones and expanding police powers and capabilities.

With regard to festivals and events in Hesse, the interior minister assured that all necessary safety measures are being implemented. "We won't let the terrorists achieve their goal. We will firmly safeguard our free and peaceful existence."

The security situation is under constant review by the police. The number of police officers in public spaces is already substantial and will be increased if deemed necessary. "We also emphasize the importance of police visibility to boost the public's sense of security," the ministry noted.

Heightened Threat Alert in Hesse

The potential terrorist threat in the Islamist community in Hesse is currently considered "generally high," according to the interior ministry. Terrorist organizations are consistently issuing propaganda, which could potentially radicalize lone actors or small groups globally, prompting them to carry out further attacks.

In 2022, the Hessian Office for the Protection of the Constitution identified 3,865 individuals connected to Islamist threats.

As of July 31, 2024, there were 13,119 individuals subject to deportation in Hesse, as per the Alien Registration.

The federal government, motivated by Poseck's call for change after Solingen, needs to enforce stricter deportation measures for individuals without valid permits. Poseck, advocating for a holistic approach to security, also proposed strengthening gun laws within the context of the federal government's migration strategy.
