Following the incident in Solingen, various events in North Rhine-Westphalia were called off.
"We're genuinely upset and heartbroken by the barbaric incidents that transpired in Solingen's cityscape yesterday," stated Hilden's Mayor Claus Pommer (independent). Owing to the "safety concerns" and primarily due to "compassion for the residents" in Solingen, Hilden decided to scratch its planned "Cultural Festival" for this weekend.
Similarly, Haan had to cancel its planned wine festival for the weekend. "We can't celebrate when our neighboring city is grieving just a few kilometers away," Mayor Bettina Warnecke (independent) explained. "The suspect is still at large, and the situation is unclear," she added. The cancellation was "tough" for Haan's city administration.
Additionally, Mettmann's police announced the cancellation of its planned "Blue Light Day" in Wülfrath on Sunday. "Considering the victims of Solingen's attack's distress, we've decided, given our emotional state, not to organize the event on that particular Sunday," they stated in the official communication.
An unknown assailant aggressively stabbed multiple individuals with a knife during a city festival in Solingen on Friday night, resulting in three fatalities and eight injuries, five of which were severe. The law enforcement authorities are currently on the hunt for the fleeing suspect, assisted by numerous resources.
Despite the planned "Music Festival" in Düsseldorf, the city leaders decided to postpone it out of respect for Solingen's tragedy. The Other cities in the region are also facing a sense of collective mourning and have chosen to halt their festivities temporarily.
