- Following the court proceedings, El Ghazi plans to contribute funds earned from Mainz 05.
It seems that professional footballer Anwar El Ghazi allegedly received a sum of 500,000 euros from his previous team, FSV Mainz 05. The Dutchman, now playing for Cardiff City since August, shared this info on Instagram. Mainz confirmed to dpa that such payments were indeed made, covering his salary from November 2023 to July 2024.
The two parties are currently embroiled in a legal spat. Mainz ended El Ghazi's contract post a pro-Palestinian Instagram post following the Hamas-ordered terrorist attack on Israel on October 7. El Ghazi had initiated a lawsuit against this termination. In July, the labor court established that the immediate termination was invalid. Following the availability of the written reasons for this judgment, Mainz announced its intention to appeal to the Rhineland-Palatinate Regional Labor Court.
El Ghazi intends to donate this money to Gaza. He wrote on Instagram, "I hope that Mainz, despite its unsuccessful efforts to avoid the rightful payment, finds solace in the knowledge that it has financially aided, through me, in making the lives of Gaza's children a tad more manageable."
The first FSV Mainz 05 agreed to pay a substantial sum to Anwar El Ghazi, which he plans to utilize for charitable purposes in Gaza. Despite the legal dispute between El Ghazi and Mainz, the payment covering his salary from November 2023 to July 2024 was confirmed by Mainz.
