- Following an occupational incident on the Rhine bridge, the situation is no longer critical for survival.
After a major accident on the aging Leverkusen Rhine Bridge of the A1 motorway last Thursday, two badly hurt workers have since been declared out of danger, as reported by the Cologne Public Prosecutor's Office. Unfortunately, a 22-year-old construction worker lost his life in the incident. The medical examiner determined that the man's demise was a result of the fall, the Prosecutor's Office revealed. The incident left a total of six workers injured. According to the "Cologne City-Anzeiger".
The Public Prosecutor's Office is currently conducting an inquiry to see if there's any indication of negligence. An expert has also joined the investigation and was already present at the scene, the Prosecutor's Office said. Preliminary findings suggest that large construction equipment may have fallen from a crane during demolition work on the old bridge.
The Leverkusen Bridge is undergoing reconstruction due to the poor condition of the original 1960s structure. The first section of the new bridge was made accessible to traffic at the beginning of February. At present, the old bridge is being dismantled, and once that's complete, the second section will be constructed alongside the first.
The Prosecutor's Office stated that an autopsy will be conducted on the deceased construction worker to further investigate his cause of death. Following the autopsy results, the investigation into potential negligence continues with the expert's insights and evidence collected at the scene.
